February 9, 2019 the North Carolina Department of Transportation, Dare County and Cape Hatteras National Seashore celebrated the opening of the Bonner Bridge Replacement. This bridge is the only access by structure to Hatteras Island for healthcare, ambulance service and delivery of food, gasoline and goods. A lifeline for the residents of Hatteras Island and access to over two million visitors each year.
A wreath was laid in Oregon Inlet to honor the connection of the Outer Banks people and the inlet. The bridge was open to foot and bicycle traffic, a wonderful opportunity for the community before it opens to vehicles.
First bridge in the state built with stainless reinforcing steel for additional protection. With 12 foot travel lanes, 8 foot shoulders, 3500 feet long at the high rise portion with 7 navigational spans each averaging 300 foot in width and designed to have a 100 year lifespan. Book a trip to Hatteras Island and drive across the new bridge over Oregon Inlet for a wonderful view.
