July 2nd, 2016 Matt and Sara were dancing at a family wedding when he whispered in Sara’s ear…”will you marry me.” Sara placed her face on his chest as tears rolled down her cheeks, she said “yes!” He asked her a hundred times that night! The next day they decided not to tell anyone. They wanted to surprise all their children with a wedding on the beach on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
Matt and Sara graduated the same year of high school and had similar friends growing up but do not remember meeting one another back then. They officially met by chance in August 2010. They hit it off immediately even after Matt mistakenly called Sara, Susan! They dated for a year before introducing one another to their children from previous marriages. Matt and Sara’s children were apprehensive at fist but soon grew to love them together. They even had bets as to when the couple would get married. On vacation to the Outer Banks in August 2013, Sara’s oldest son looked at her and said; “if you and Matt ever break up “I’m going with Matt”. In 2012 Matt and Sara bought a house together and their life and love as a family grew stronger and fuller.
In December 2015 Sara booked their 2016 Outer Banks Vacation. She was so excited to have all of her five children ages 28, 23, 16, 14, 7 and Matt’s 16 year old daughter on vacation for the first time ever. Life was the best it ever was. In January 2016 they lost their 14 year old son Caleb in a tragic accident. Life changed in that very moment forever. They are still grieving together and holding one another up as a family.
On August 2, 2016 it was raining and storming on and off throughout the day. As Tony Joseph their wedding officiant and I played phone tag. Trying to coordinate a different plan if the rain would not let up for their beach ceremony. After the couple pulled a bunch of last minute strings, the Wedding was relocated to a storm safe gazebo on Pamlico Sound at Tale of the Whale restaurant in Nags Head, NC. The couple told their children they were heading to a family portrait session on the beach.
As I pulled up to the the waterfront restaurant it was raining pretty hard. I met the family on the front porch of Tale of the Whale. All of Matthew and Sara’s children were ready for their “family portrait’s” as they were unaware of the Wedding that was about to take place. Tony Joseph their Wedding Officiant with I Do OBX Weddings and Events was waiting for us around the corner in the gazebo.
I went ahead of the family down the long boardwalk as they all huddled under umbrellas to walk towards the gazebo for our session. Matt bent down on one knee and looked up and Sara and said “marry me.” As they all turned the corner and saw Tony and myself they realized what was about to happen. Tears and hugs of joy filled the gazebo as all of their children and their friends entered the gazebo. Soulmates, a family meant to be together!
Caleb’s favorite colors were black and red. His bike and motor scooter were also black and red. The family wears red and black bracelets in honor of Caleb’s memory. The bracelets have angel wings around his name, his birth date and the day he left so suddenly. There were black and red ribbons on all of their flowers to honor his memory and to have a piece of their son with them on their Wedding day.
