Hatteras Island is an east coast hot spot for kiteboarding enthusiasts. Since the conception of kiteboarding, Cape Hatteras has been home to well known industry brands and retail shops. They have made Cape Hatteras their home due to the predictable trade winds. The island allows so much accessibility to flat water kiteboarding or ocean kitesurfing sessions, literally within walking distance of one another. Cape Hatteras, prior to the conception of kiteboarding, has always been the number one east coast, surf and wind surf destination. With it’s famous Canadian Hole. Kite point became famous very quickly with kiteboarders looking for wind as the windsurfers used Canadian Hole. Kite point (KP) became well known during the kiteboarding boom. A period of time where both kiteboarders and windsurfers wanted their own water space to practice their sport.
REAL Water Sports was one of the original kiteboarding facilities on the island, originally located in Buxton, NC and relocated to their current/flagship store in Waves, Hatteras Island, NC. Real Water Sports created one of the first competitions over 10 years ago for kiteboarding, the Triple S. Still a great competition today. The Outer Banks of North Carolina also home to well know brands, Best Kiteboarding and Epic Kites.
I had the privilege of working with Joshua Bacon, the North American, JN Kite Sport partner today during a product photo shoot in Frisco, NC. JN Kite sports have been making kites under the JN brand since 2003. Michael Nesler handles the design side of things, and his partner Bernd Jochum manages the business. Prior to launching JN Kite Sports he designed kites for some of the big names in the industry. Their vision “The art of creating tomorrow’s sporting goods… Spend time outdoors, participate in everything, look around you and find out what makes people happy.“
“Their first kite, the Wild Thing was a high performance monster and also a graphic design masterpiece. This was followed by the original Prima Donna which performed extremely well with the change in direction to wakestyle. A mean looping and unhooking machine. Since then they have followed up these kites with a successful high performance range of open C shapes and newer hybrid designs appealing to all sectors of the market. The company has grown in design and distribution partners and team riders have become like family. The current team is a real European mix. The JN team is managing the complete value chain for JN Kites & Boards from design till distribution. We achieved several World Champion titles in snow kiting and kitesurfing, further product test winners and awards (ISPO Award, Export Award).”
Today I photographed the latest most engineered model of Mr Fantastic, an aerodynamic marvel of evolution from JN design. Mr Fantastic is Shaped with a swept back leading edge, which allows the rider to adjust the angle of the approach as with other de-powered kites, but without the loss of direct steering. The new 3D concave shape to aid beginner kiteboarders to experienced riders in relaunching easily from the water. Check out their website for more information on their kiteboarding gear http://www.jn-kites.com/.
If you are down in Cape Hatteras any day there is wind you may spot JN’s North American partner cruising on the beach or parked at Kite Point in his 1962 Mercedes Unimog. Don’t be shy stop and say hi and check out some demo gear from JN Kite Sports. Check out a few frames below of the product photo shoot with JN Kite Sports.
